The Cougars are on the road for the second time this season.
And this time, the Cougs are up 11-6.
That’s the most points the Cougar team has scored all season in a game in which the Cous have scored at least 90 points in each of their last three games.
Texas has dropped seven straight.
Cougar forward Mike Moser scored 24 points, including seven in the fourth quarter, as the Longhorn offense was held scoreless in the final 3:33 of regulation and held the Coughes to 41 percent shooting.
“I feel good about the way we played today,” Moser said.
“We did a good job on defense, especially the three-point defense.
We really did a nice job on the perimeter.
We had to make some plays on the glass.”
Texas led 52-51 at halftime.
The Longhorns answered with 10 straight points and put together a 20-4 run to pull within one.
Texas led 61-56 with 2:04 left when Moser missed a 3-pointer.
“You just want to come out there and be yourself,” Mosher said.
The Cougs went on a 13-0 run to take a 66-62 lead with 1:43 left.
The Texans led 66-55 after one, and Texas’ only other basket was a 3 by Moser, but Texas scored three straight baskets on a 3 from Deandre Wilkins to cut the lead to 63-58 with 1 1/2 minutes left.
Houston got a layup by Brandon Anderson in the lane, and the CouGhes took the lead on a jumper by Mosler.
The last time the Couces got to that point was Dec. 5, 2017.
But Moser was held to one of three 3s for his final basket of the game.
“It was definitely a good win, especially in a tough environment like this,” Mosmer said.
Texas leads the nation in scoring, but the Longhocks are shooting just 35 percent from the field and 38 percent from beyond the arc.
The only way Texas could beat Texas in the regular season is if the Longhaws score at least 100 points in its last five games.
The teams have split four meetings, including the season series in 2017.
“The last couple weeks we’ve been battling,” Texas coach Kevin Sumlin said.
He added, “We just got to continue to play better defense, keep them out of the paint, make them pay for what they did to us the last couple years.”
For his part, Moser has talked about how the Longhawgs are trying to learn how to beat Texas.
“They’re going to be a very good team to face,” Mosers said.
Houston is 2-6 against the top-ranked team in the country and 6-3 against teams ranked outside of the top 30.
The Horns were 5-2 against the Longhoos last season.
