What you need to know about Kentucky basketball’s win over Michigan

After the Kentucky Wildcats defeated Michigan on Sunday, the Wolverines were already talking about their next opponent.

“We’re looking forward to the next game,” said Michigan coach John Beilein, who has been in the thick of the recruiting process.

“Obviously we’ve got a lot of work to do, but we’re excited.”

The Wolverines also made a point of emphasizing their success on the road, something that was missing from a team that fell to Ohio State in the semifinals.

“It was a great win for us,” Beileins coach Mark Dantonio said.

“There’s always that, ‘I don’t know how it happened but it did.’

I mean, it’s kind of a cliché, but it really was a nice win.”

Kentucky’s success on home court will help it continue to build on the momentum that followed its upset of Florida last week.

The Wildcats are 12-0 in the series and have the ability to clinch the second-most wins in the nation if they can beat Michigan on Saturday.

Kentucky leads the series with a 3-0 mark.

The Wolverards (13-10, 7-5 SEC) have won five of six.

The series also includes three matchups in the final two weeks of the season: at Michigan on Feb. 9, and at Missouri on Feb 25.

“If we’re going to be successful in this series, we’ve gotta go out there and play really, really well,” Beilins coach said.

The win was Louisville’s first in the Big East in eight seasons and the fourth in the last five games.

Kentucky is 12-1 in the league’s regular season and is on pace for its fourth consecutive winning season.

This season, the Wildcats have played in 13 games, with the last being a 78-65 victory over No. 9 Kentucky on Jan. 13.

Kentucky has a three-game winning streak to start the season and a six-game win streak in the ACC.

After a 1-3 start to the season, Kentucky has won five straight against top-10 opponents and is riding a nine-game road winning streak.

The Cardinals have played six of the last eight meetings with Kentucky.

Michigan was ranked No. 17 in the AP poll and No. 23 in the BPI.

In the Big Ten, the Spartans are tied with No. 14 Indiana for the second best record in the conference behind Ohio State.

Michigan is also one of three teams in the SEC to have a winning record in seven straight games.

The other two are Kentucky and Purdue.

With Michigan out of the playoff race, Louisville has to win its next three games to maintain its place in the playoff picture.

That might be the toughest stretch for the Wildcats, who are still trying to find their footing after losing a top-25 opponent for the first time since 2014.

“The whole season, you’re always looking to make changes,” Beilerins coach, said.
