Texas beats Wisconsin in national semifinal

The top seed Texas beat Wisconsin 69-58 Saturday in the NCAA tournament.

Texas coach Kevin Sumlin had a difficult night, with the Longhorns falling behind by as many as nine points.

The loss leaves the Longhorn faithful looking for a solution to the team’s inability to stay healthy, something Sumlin has been searching for.

The Longhorns shot a blistering 55 percent from the field in the first half, but the Badgers outscored the Longhoms 30-12.

Texas shot just 34 percent from beyond the arc and the Badger players struggled to make shots.

Sumlin said that wasn’t a function of his players, but that it was because the Badges were so good at getting to the line.

“They were shooting a lot of threes,” Sumlin told reporters after the game.

“They weren’t taking them, they were taking them too easy.

They’re not getting any threes at all.

I think they’re getting frustrated, I think it’s a lot about the lack of energy.

We’re getting into a rhythm.”

The Badgers took a 31-18 lead into the break, but Texas scored a season-high 36 unanswered points to get within nine at the break.

Texas coach Kevin Trier, who took over in late November after Tom Herman left for Texas A&M, was the star of the game in the third quarter.

Sumlins first game with a young team, a loss, was a disaster.

Texas is 8-9 since he arrived, and has lost eight of their last nine games.

Sumls team was in complete control of the second half and led 24-15.

“I felt like we were doing a pretty good job,” Sumls said.

“I think the only thing that could have helped us was the mental aspect.

We didn’t score a lot and they made shots.

We had a couple good plays, but we were just missing some good ones.

I thought the guys stepped up and showed that we have to step up.”

The Longhorn defense made its presence felt.

Badgers coach Gary Williams, who played under Sumlin at Texas A &M, said his team was not as strong as it was against Wisconsin.

“We had a lot more energy than we had in the past,” Williams said.

Sums defense was not in the game against Wisconsin, which led the Big Ten by 16 points.

Texas is now 3-2 against Wisconsin since Trier took over.

Sumlis is 1-1 against the Badgies, and the last time Texas beat the Badgs was in the Big Dance in the 2017 NCAA tournament semifinal.
